The North Shore Heritage Preservation Society was created
in June 2005 from two groups: the North Shore Heritage Network and
the Hodgson House Society. The North Shore Heritage Network was an
online service launched in early 2005 by two North Vancouver homeowners, providing information on
renovations, events and general heritage issues. The Hodgson House
Society was created around the same time by a group of West Vancouver
residents in a bid to save and restore
the former home of early architect Hugh Hodgson as a public
facility dedicated to the Craftsman style and the evolution of
local architecture. While that effort failed —
the
house had been shipped to Nanaimo, and was quickly sold to
another buyer for renovation —
the group decided to press on and form a
society to protect and preserve other heritage buildings. It
joined forces with the North Shore Heritage Network, and the North
Shore Heritage Preservation Society was born.
The
society has a broad aim of inspiring, facilitating and promoting
the preservation, rehabilitation and restoration of historic and distinctive
buildings. Its mandate involves educating and raising awareness in
the community of merits of such buildings, and how they can embody
a sense of history, serve to preserve qualities of craftsmanship,
enhance the spirit and character of the community, and provide
aesthetic pleasure. When
they're gone, they're gone forever.
Specifically,
North Shore Heritage aims to (a) promote awareness through special
events, such as lectures, workshops and open houses; (b) provide
an information resource for residents of the North
Shore
and
others; (c) monitor and provide community input to local
government policy; and (d) act when buildings are under threat.
The
society's email forum
created an informal network of contacts among North
Shore homeowners and others, for the free exchange of relevant
information —
renovation
questions, contractors and suppliers, tips/advice, historical
research, and general information on events and developments. A list of suppliers and contractors that have worked
on North
Shore
heritage
home renovations is available through the email forum.
You
can also be kept up to date on local developments through the
website's News page.
"The
District of West Vancouver's Heritage Advisory Committee has
reviewed this website, and believes that it is an excellent
resource for homeowners, and anyone else with an interest in
heritage. Given links to other heritage websites, it is a good
primary source of information" —
Tom Wardell, Chair of West Vancouver council's Heritage Advisory
Commission.
"The
City of North Vancouver's Heritage Advisory Commission is pleased
to endorse the efforts of David Pike and Gillian Welsh in
establishing the North Shore Heritage Network and its website, and
hope that it can lead to broader awareness of our community's
history, and greater communication among heritage home enthusiasts
throughout the region" —
Scott Peters, Chair of the City of North Vancouver Heritage
Advisory Commission.
